Lunch with mum and aunt

Posted by dawn On June - 30 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

The other day I was having lunch with mum and aunt after the Liz Claiborne fashion show in Bangsar Village 2. We decided to try out the Thai food at Basil in Bangsar Village 1. Mum ordered pineapple fried rice which was good, pretty normal. Aunt ordered some Thai mee hoon which was also nice but nothing exceptional.

All my life I ate tom yam that’s red in colour. So I was surprised to find a clear tom yam seafood kuey teow soup in the menu. Since I never see or tried one before, I decided to order it. And so…it looks like that:

It looks plain but there seems to be lots of chili seeds in the soup. So I took a sip to taste the soup. It’s nice but SO SPICY. After I few mouthfuls I couldn’t eat it anymore. So I ate aunt’s mee hoon and some of mum’s rice. We all shared the SUPER spicy bowl of evil till there are tears and sweat and lots of sniffles. haha! Mum can really eat chili’s and most of the things I find spicy is really nothing to her. So of course I didn’t realize how spicy the bowl of kuey teow really was till mum said this while we eat. She was eating and randomly looked up saying in Cantonese:

“Eh…tung chor hou chi mou kam yeat” (translate: when the noodle gets cooler it’s not so hot)

She was trying to say when the noodle gets cooler it’s not so spicy instead she said hot. HAHA! It’s not so funny in English as it is in Cantonese since most Malaysians inter use hot and spicy. I had a good laugh though, how since if it’s cool definitely it’s not hot. haha! =)

Father’s Day…before, during, after…

Posted by dawn On June - 29 - 20095 COMMENTS

I wanted to blog about this long time ago. BUT I lost my USB cable so can’t transfer the pictures. And after getting the memory reader today I thought ok finally I can blog. Then again, the pictures came out like that.

OR ….

like this

So I thought wtf. I don’t care. I’ll just blog anyway or else I’ll only blog next father’s day. Oh another reason also, there’s not much pictures.  Coz I was sick and sis was tired and we just remember to eat and forgot to take pics. haha!

Father’s Day like Mother’s Day usually fall on a Sunday, I think… (correct me if I’m wrong). This year we decided to cook for dad :) A friend of mine was mentioning about how commercialized this kinda ‘days’ had become. With every reason to have a sale. Which I thought about and yea…it’s quite true but I don’t think it’s a bad thing either. I mean being Asian, growing up Asian it’s just not easy to be affectionate with family members. Parents especially. Oh well, at least for me. I’m not saying we are cold or anything. Just that these kinda ‘days’ just gives us an opportunity to show our love. Or maybe, to describe it better, show EXTRA love. OK OK I found a better way to say it. These ‘days’ though commercialized, allows us to show our love explicitly. Usually it’s more subtle. haha.

Since sis had to work on Sunday, we decided to celebrate on Saturday instead. Friday night went karaoke with my then still unwell sis, sang the night away sharing one mike forgetting she’s unwell with virus everywhere. haha! Already felt unwell before going but didn’t want to ‘fong fei kei’. :p Coz my sis is great. Love hanging out with her too. I tell you why she’s great. As we walk around taking food at the buffet area:

Dawn: Hey, wanna cook for father’s day?

Sis: Won’t they go the grandma’s? (Parents usually do on Sat with bro)

Dawn: Cheh, just tell them not to coz we are cooking.

Sis: OK LA *Big smile*

SO COOL right my sis? The best decision maker ever! The most indecisive EVER.

BUT, sometimes she can too. I found out when I woke up the next morning and found her searching the web for recipes on what to cook. She wanted to cook so many things I said it’s impossible to have a main. So basically everything was a side. haha! We had pasta with prawns and bacon strips, lamb, mash potato, stir fried asparagus, boiled brocolli and cherry tomatoes. For drinks we had dark grape juice and later Taylor’s port wine (fantastically sweet…). Cappuccino cheese cake for dessert from Secret Recipe. I just managed to help sis make mash potatoes, started sneezing, help her cut garlic, sneezed more…felt sick…told her I gotta go. So she cooked the rest. Another reason why she is COOL. Right? And not complain bout it. AND wash up after dinner. =D

It was great. I think cooking and eating together as a family is wonderful. With all of us grown up, we eat less together. With group A friends, group B friends, ex colleagues, current colleagues, for me even sis’s friends, not mentioning boyfriends…oops…i meant boyfriend, boyfriend’s friends, sometimes it’s just hard to keep up. Friends coming home from north south east west. Taking the opportunity of these ‘days’ to be with the family is a good way of looking at them however commercialized. I would like to look at it the other way round. Because of LOVE, these ‘days’ become commercialized. Well, no demand no supply right.

Next day, sick. Basically slept through Father’s Day. A family that eats together, stays together. Looking forward to many more cooking lessons with sis (yes I learn alot helping her) and eating with family! Oh…my dad loves to travel…we shall see next year or sooner maybe…? ngek ngek…;)

When to visit Bali?

Posted by dawn On June - 22 - 20096 COMMENTS

I think this is a common question for people wanting to visit a particular place for the very first time. Since I’m sitting here not feeling quite well and I can’t sleep, so I thought I should google and find my answer since Bali’s next on my calendar.

So after some research, most say it’s best to visit during the dry season from April to September. And due to the various holidays around the world which brings large crowds to this tropical paradise, it is best to visit in April, May or towards end of September. So since April and May had already passed, I’d be booking Bali for end of September. By which time I hope all H1N1 virus would be gone from the face of the earth.

*Random fact: Bro’s school in Jalan Davidson closed for one week due to the virus.*

OH, I also read that the Balinese has got lots of colourful festivals and it’s not to be missed by visitors. Will google on that soon! Hopefully they have on in September! =)

MIEU MIEU

MIEU…. mieeeu… No it’s not a cat. hehe… It’s a boutique in Sri Hartamas. It’s NOT just ANOTHER boutique but it’s my SIS’s!!! =) It’s located right opposite Black Hole and beside Pelita on the second floor. I got into the lift which looks a bit old but the boutique looks just so nice. With lots of white (one of my fav colours), it’s very English inspired. From the ‘Welcome’ sign to all its little decorations.

I’ve been there two weeks ago and as much as I thought the place was cute and cosy, I didn’t think the clothes were to my taste. BUT this time around, there are so MANY more choices! With different designs and styles, I think it now caters to a wider range of customers. The first time I saw only a few things I liked but this time, there are so many things I like, I wanna buy them all! (if I can :p). Besides clothes, they also have quite a range of accessories. So many cute necklaces, bracelets (which i spotted a few), rings and earrings! (which i spotted more than a few!!!) =)

Quite a number of pretty quirky and different pieces :)

And then as I browse through the clothes, I saw something that somehow reminds me of Pinky….This soft flowy light green-yellowish chiffon cocktail dress. I like =). Reminds me how she’s so slim and the clothes can’t fit. And she has to change like more than six times to get the right size. This looks small enough Pinky! :)

I also found so many clothes I like! Here are a few I manage to take pics with at the last minute:

Accompanied sis from the time the shop opens at 12pm till 9pm. So you guys working nearby can drop by at her shop and take a look. And when there’s no customers and when we get bored, I’d go down to the Korean mart downstairs to get these!

SO SO YUMMay!!!

Will post up more pictures we took from my sis phone when there’s no customers. For now if you wish to know more or see more, do visit their website at MIEU!!!

Toodles!
